| Debian GNU/Linux - The Universal Operating System · Debian GNU/Linux - The Universal Operating System | |
From Debians webpage:The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system . This operating system that we have created is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short. Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel. Linux is a piece of software started by Linus Torvalds and supported by thousands of programmers worldwide. ... A large part of the basic tools that fill out the operating system come from the GNU project; hence the names: GNU/Linux and GNU/Hurd. These tools are also free. Of course, the thing that people want is application software: programs to help them get what they want to do done, from editing documents to running a business to playing games to writing more software. Debian comes with over 8710 packages (precompiled software that is bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine) - all of it free. It's a bit like a tower. At the base is the kernel. On top of that are all the basic tools. Next is all the software that you run on the computer. At the top of the tower is Debian - carefully organising and fitting everything so it all works together. Our Comment: Debian is our choice of operating system for all our computer and server setups |

| The Gimp · The Gimp | |
From The Gimps webpage:GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc. GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted. GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X. Our Comment: There is not much to say Everybody loves the gimp. We can not imagine at all, why anyone would choose to use any other pricy image processor. |

From IT-Director.com:I am obliged to thank those who recommended that I experiment with Firefox's tabbed browsing. It isn't just a good idea, it's a brilliant idea. All I wanted to do was stop the damn pop-ups, which had been proliferating on the web like MyDoom. I didn't feel the need for a better browser, until I found myself using one. Now I even feel grateful. ... Our Comment: We can just say: Faster, better and correct display of the pages (see the Wilbert image above, in IE the background is blue, with firefox it has a very nice transparent effect). |

From Thunderbirds webpage:(continued from the firefox quote) ... I can also tell the same story about Mozilla Thunderbird. I've converted. It is better than Outlook - for my purposes at least. It has all the features that matter, you can convert data (address book and mail) from Outlook in about 1 hour and it stops spam. (Not all of it so far, but most of it.) Our Comment: Is there another e-mail client? |

From Mozilla Calendars webpage:Mozilla Calendar We are striving to build a cross-platform fully standards based calendar client based on the open iCal standard. Our client is built using the XUL user interface language and is targeted at Mozilla based browsers. Mozilla Calendar vs. Mozilla Sunbird Mozilla Calendar is the calendar extension for Mozilla products such as the Mozilla Application Suite, Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird. Mozilla Sunbird is the stand-alone form of the calendar extension, which means that it doesn't need one of the above mentioned applications to run. Mozilla Sunbird and Mozilla Calendar use the same base code so their functionality is virtually the same and they share the same bugs and bug fixes. |
